A New Freelancer R?

Hey Internet! So…I have been thinking.

Yes, yes, smoke, sweat, and all that stuff, but in all honesty, I have been thinking. And the thinking is about our little blog here.

One of the blogs that I’ve tried to keep up with is  Nerdy Life of Mine, by the great Jason Bucky Roberts, so totally go check that out. I mean, after you read this cause this is important. Anyway, one of his posts was about reinventation, specifically redesigning his blog and coming up blog topics that help to make the blog better.

Ever since then, I’ve been thinking of that in terms of this blog. Here’s why –

  • When I started this in 2010, I was just starting out on a huge adventure as a freelancer, while also moving out of my home state to another.
  • Since that time, many things have changed – mainly that I’m no longer freelancing. I’m gainfully employed.

This isn’t to say that I want to stop the site; not at all. After all the reserach I did for trying to figure out freelancing, I cam across a number of sites from writers who were already established – they were far into their careers or had previous careers that they used to finance the new one – and while that’s great, sometimes it doesn’t help someone who’s just starting.

For example, as much as I loved my life as a musician, I could never be a teacher. Not just because I don’t have the patience for it, but it’s been literally and figuratively forever since I was just starting out that I feel removed from being back at the begining. Now of course, when I pick up a trumpet and play, there’s a deeper feeling of frustration because the foundation is there, but the talent seems lost, you know?

Anyway, my point is…I’m thinking of changing Freelancing R to something else, like maybe Writing R or Writer 66 (oooh! last one sounds catchy!). The site will take a change to more about writing, especially when my current job has me writing a number of different things that I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t gotten the job.

One of the first things I’d like to start is something called the Writer’s Room, which would talk about writing, but in a professional sense maybe and what we can learn. I’ll be totally honest up front – I suspect the first post is going to be a lengthy rant about Hollywood Writing Rooms, especially on TV because as a fan (slowly turning into former at this point), I got a bone to pick with some shows (you’ve got a target on your back now, OUAT!)

But I’m thinking something like that, along with maybe a thing about classic books. I’m making my way through Lord of the Rings for the first time and valiantly (not really) trying to finish the epic that is Moby Dick (damn it, past Gina, why didn’t you tell me!?)

Yes, I know I could just add these as separate sections here, but I would hate to have newly freelancers come to a site that’s no longer about freelancing, though a section about freelance writing could totally happen.

So once again, I turn to you, Internet and web reading public! How do we feel about this? Would a Writer 66 site be more exciting? And yes, I’m sure that if the site changed, I’d probably post more, so the three of you that are reading, yes you’ll get better, faster updates. Thoughts? Drop me a comment!
